Book review - Misfits by Garrett Leigh (m/m/m ménage romance) 5/5 stars

Misfits by Garrett Leigh
M/M/M ménage romance
5/5 stars

Misfits is an absolutely wonderful book that now sits near the top of my all time favourite books list.  It is a beautiful story of love and devotion between three men.  Often ménage stories can all be about sex, but Misfits goes much deeper than that.  It is full of love, emotion and angst and is a book that will remain with you - the characters work their way into your heart and you won't forget them.

Restaurant owner Tom Fearnes has loved his partner Cass for as long as he can remember, but their work often keeps them apart. When he meets a striking young man named Jake on the vibrant streets of Camden Town, their heady first encounter takes an unexpected turn.
Jake Thompson can hardly believe his luck when he wakes up in Tom’s bed. Tom is gorgeous, kind, and . . . taken. Tom’s explanation of his open relationship leaves Jake cold, but Tom is too tempting, and when hard times force Jake to accept Tom’s helping hand, he finds himself between two men who’ve lost their way.
Cass Pearson is a troubled soul. He loves Tom with all he has, but some days it feels like he hasn’t much to give. Jake seems like the perfect solution. Cass risks everything to push Jake and Tom together, but Jake resists, wary, until the darkness of Cass’s past comes to call. Then Jake finds himself the last man standing, and it’s time to dig deep and shine a light for the men he’s grown to love.

The three main characters in this book are brilliantly written - they are complex, have their issues and flaws, and you really get to know them in this book.  Tom is a wealthy restaurant owner who is a real 'fixer', he's a total sweetheart.  Cass is Tom's partner, they have been together for nine years and have an 'open' relationship.  They love each other dearly but also occasionally sleep with other men.  I wasn't sure about this to start with, it seemed like cheating to me, but I soon realised that this unusual relationship worked for them and they were confident in their love for each other.

Cass is a talented chef and co-owns several restaurants with Tom.  He is a workaholic and rarely has time to spend with Tom, which has led to their relationship starting to falter despite their deep connection and love.  Cass has a troubled past and is probably the most complicated of the three characters.  Throughout the book the story is told from Tom and jake's points of view, we don't get Cass' voice until the epilogue.  This makes Cass seem even more mysterious and elusive, he is a fantastic character with lots of layers.

Now where do I start with Jake - I love him!  Jake has Tourette's syndrome and struggles to hold down a job as employers don't understand his condition and aren't sympathetic to his sudden tics and outbursts of swearing.  I have a cousin who has Tourette's and I thought the author dealt with it with it sympathetically and realistically.  Jake is so sweet, a real gentle soul.  He is also the missing link in Tom and Cass' relationship, he could be just what they need to make things work between them.

The relationship between the three of them is a slow burner, the story gradually unfolds over a number of months.  I love that the author took her time building the relationship and took her time in getting them together.  Often in ménage books the relationship seems to instantly work, but this is a much more realistic representation of a complicated type of relationship that takes effort to make it work.

Garrett Leigh is a talented author, her writing style draws you into the story and keeps you turning the pages.  Misfits is a fantastic book that i definitely recommend, it gets five big stars.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.
